National Nest Box Week will be upon us soon (14th-21st February to be precise) and it a good opportunity to buy yourself a bird box mainly because many retailers do a discount! We here at Yorkshire Wildlife Trust will be offering a very generous 25% off all our bird boxes for the month of February. You can either buy in store at Potteric Carr Nature Reserve in Doncaster or online (click here) and use discount code BIRDBOXWEEK in your cart.
We recommend the following sized box for different species
28mm Hole – To restrict access to blue, marsh and coal tits, and possibly wrens, choose the 28mm hole. All other species will be excluded by the smaller entrance.
32mm Hole – To let any small birds use the box choose the 32mm hole – suitable for great, marsh & coal tits, redstart, nuthatch, pied flycatcher, house sparrow and tree sparrows.
Open Fronted – Some species like wrens, robins and flycatchers won’t use nest boxes with holes. They prefer an open-fronted design, hopping into the box after alighting on a nearby branch. To maximise chances of occupation, site the box discreetly within a quiet bush or hedge.
